Tracking reveals the hidden lives of secretive animals. To successfully follow fresh tracks and sneak into an intimate distance from a wild animal requires a suite of skills: the ability to see tracks in a variety of substrates, knowledge of the animal's behavior, local knowledge of the terrain, finesse in the art of reading wind movement, stealthy movement through the bush, and a little bit of luck. In a sense, tracking is the foundation of and promotes woodswoman and woodsmanship skills.
My journey as a tracker began in the late 90's as I lived a semi-primitive lifestyle for two months in the deserts and mountains of southeast Utah. In 2002 I joined the Vermont Wilderness School, where, along with my colleagues, I started diving deep into learning this ancient art and skill. It was in 2006 that I took my first CyberTracker Evaluation, and my development as a tracker has largely been guided through this system (see www.trackercertification.com and www.cybertracker.org for more info).
It took me nine years to achieve a Specialist Certificate in both Track & Sign and Trailing to receive my Senior Tracker Certificate. Then it took me another six years of training to become a Trailing Evaluator.
Tracking plays a role in my life now as a professional biologist, while hunting, and as an educator to share this skill set with others.
Prior to the many gadgets that have infiltrated modern hunting culture, tracking was the foundation of an outdoorsperson's skill set. My goal is to foster a return to the innate human-predator abilities within our modern hunting culture. Instead of relying on technology to find animals, I can teach you to learn to be so intimate with your quarry and locality, that you can regularly encounter big game at close ranges.
Tracker training for new hunters will teach you how to identify animal spoor, interpret their behavior, and learn to trail animals after the shot. Tracker training for seasoned hunters will push your ability to recover animals after the shot, and show you how to locate animals by trailing to hunt them.
I offer CyberTracker Trailing Evaluations & Certifications; Trailing workshops; Track & Sign identification and interpretation workshops; and custom trainings.
